How it works

kcal/min = MET × 3.5 × weight(kg) ÷ 200 · Total = kcal/min × minutes

Active recovery means moving at a genuinely easy intensity — enough to boost circulation without adding training stress. Energy cost is estimated with the standard MET equation, where one MET is resting metabolism and light recovery work sits around 2.5–4 METs. Because the burn scales with body weight, heavier individuals expend more for the same activity. Keep the effort conversational; going harder turns recovery back into training.

Worked example

A 70 kg person doing 30 minutes of easy walking (MET 3.0): kcal/min = 3.0 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 = 3.675, so 30 minutes ≈ 110 kcal.

Frequently asked questions

How hard should active recovery be?

Easy enough to hold a full conversation — roughly 2.5–4 METs, or a low heart-rate zone. If you find yourself breathing hard or accumulating fatigue, you have drifted into a training session rather than recovery.

Are MET-based calorie estimates accurate?

They are reasonable population averages but can be off by 10–20% for any individual, since fitness, movement economy and body composition all matter. Treat the number as a ballpark, not a precise measurement.

Does active recovery burn fat?

It burns calories like any movement, and low intensities do use a higher proportion of fat for fuel, but total energy is modest. Its main value is circulation and adherence, not being a big calorie burner.
