How it works

Net cost = total cost − credit/assistance · Monthly = (net cost − saved × (1+r)^n) ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1) ÷ r

Adoption costs are large and vary enormously by path — foster-care adoptions can be nearly free, while private or international adoptions can reach tens of thousands. The federal adoption tax credit and many employer benefits offset a meaningful share, so the amount you actually have to save is the net cost after that help. Note that a tax credit reduces the tax you owe rather than arriving as cash upfront, so you may still need to bridge the timing with savings.

Worked example

On a $40,000 adoption with a $16,810 credit and $5,000 already saved, the net cost is about $23,190. Over 24 months at 3% APY, roughly $760 a month funds the remaining gap.

Frequently asked questions

How much does adoption cost?

It depends heavily on the type. Adopting from foster care is often little to no cost, while agency-assisted domestic and international adoptions commonly run from the mid five figures upward once fees, legal costs and travel are included.

How does the adoption tax credit work?

The federal adoption tax credit lets qualifying families claim eligible adoption expenses up to an annual limit, reducing the federal tax they owe. It is generally non-refundable but can be carried forward, so its cash value depends on your tax liability. Confirm current limits and rules with the IRS or a tax professional.

Can employer benefits help with adoption?

Many employers offer adoption assistance that reimburses a portion of expenses or provides paid leave. Check your benefits — it can be combined with the tax credit to cut the amount you need to save.
