How it works

Months left = (lifespan − age) × 12 · Monthly reserve = (cost − already reserved) ÷ months left

A replacement fund spreads a large, predictable expense across the years before it happens, so a failed water heater or refrigerator is a planned withdrawal rather than an emergency on a credit card. The monthly figure is simply the amount still needed divided by the months of useful life remaining. Doing this for each major appliance turns a series of lumpy shocks into a small, steady line in your budget.

Worked example

A $1,400 appliance expected to last 12 years is 4 years old, leaving 8 years (96 months). With $150 already reserved, $1,250 remains, so about $13 a month — roughly $156 a year — has it fully funded by the time it wears out.

Frequently asked questions

What is an appliance replacement fund?

It is money set aside gradually toward the eventual replacement of appliances, so their end of life is a budgeted expense instead of a surprise. It is a form of sinking fund.

How long do home appliances last?

Rough averages: refrigerators 10–15 years, washers and dryers 10–13, dishwashers about 9–10, and water heaters 8–12. Use the figure that matches your specific unit and how heavily it is used.

Should I have one fund or several?

You can pool everything into one home-maintenance fund and use this calculator per appliance to set the target contribution, or keep separate tallies. What matters is that the monthly total covers the sum of the individual reserves.
