Assignment Reading Time Calculator
Estimate how long a reading assignment takes from its page count, words per page and your reading speed.
How it works
minutes = (pages × words per page) ÷ reading speed (wpm)
Reading time is total words divided by your reading speed. Estimating the words from pages × words-per-page keeps it practical for a syllabus that lists page ranges rather than word counts. Plain fiction reads near your top speed, but dense textbooks, annotation and re-reading slow you well below it — the note-taking line applies a 1.5× factor to reflect careful academic reading.
Worked example
A 30-page chapter at 300 words per page is 9,000 words. At 200 words per minute that is 9,000 ÷ 200 = 45 minutes of reading, or about 68 minutes (1 h 08 min) with note-taking.
Frequently asked questions
What reading speed should I use?
Adults average around 200–250 words per minute for general prose. For technical or unfamiliar material, drop to 100–150 wpm — comprehension, not raw speed, is the limit there.
How many words are on a page?
It varies with format: roughly 250–300 for a typical textbook or novel page, more for dense academic text, far fewer for illustrated or large-print pages. Adjust the words-per-page field to match your book.
Why is the note-taking estimate so much longer?
Stopping to highlight, summarise and think roughly halves your effective pace, so careful reading with notes takes about 1.5 times as long as straight reading — sometimes more for problem-heavy material.
