Assist-to-Turnover Ratio Calculator
Basketball assist-to-turnover ratio, assists and turnovers per game and per 36 minutes, turnover percentage and how the ratio compares with position norms.
How it works
A/TO = assists ÷ turnovers; TOV% = TOV ÷ (FGA + 0.44 × FTA + TOV) × 100
The assist-to-turnover ratio measures how well a ball-handler creates for others relative to giving the ball away. Elite point guards sit around 3:1 or better; a ratio below 1 for a primary handler is a problem. Because usage inflates raw turnovers, turnover percentage — turnovers per 100 plays used — is the fairer comparison across roles.
Worked example
186 assists and 72 turnovers in 30 games: 2.58 ratio, 6.2 assists and 2.4 turnovers a game; TOV% about 14.9%.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good ratio in youth or college basketball?
Above 1.5 is good and above 2 is excellent at lower levels, where turnovers are more common.
Why 0.44 free-throw attempts?
Roughly 44% of free throws end a possession (and-ones and technicals do not), so 0.44 × FTA estimates possessions used at the line.
