How it works

net = salary − salary sacrifice − income tax − Medicare levy 2% − HELP repayment; super guarantee = 12% × ordinary time earnings, paid by the employer on top

Australian salaries are usually quoted excluding superannuation, with the 12% guarantee paid on top into your fund — so a $90,000 salary is a $100,800 package. PAYG withholding covers income tax and the Medicare levy; HELP repayments are withheld too if you have declared a debt. Salary sacrificing extra super is taxed at 15% inside the fund instead of your marginal rate, within the $30,000 concessional cap that includes the employer’s 12%.

Worked example

$90,000 with a HELP debt: tax $17,788, Medicare $1,800, HELP $3,450 → $66,962 a year, $2,575 a fortnight; the employer adds $10,800 of super.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my payslip show slightly different tax?

Withholding tables round per pay period and may not include offsets; the annual return reconciles it.

Does super count as income?

Not for income tax — it is taxed at 15% in the fund. Super is included in some means tests.
