Average of Numbers Calculator
Enter a list of numbers to get their average (mean), along with the sum, count, minimum, maximum and range.
How it works
mean = (x₁ + x₂ + … + xₙ) / n
The average, or arithmetic mean, evens out a set of numbers: it is the single value each item would hold if the total were shared equally. Add every number, then divide by how many there are. Because it uses every value, the mean is pulled toward unusually large or small entries (outliers).
Worked example
For 10, 20, 30, 40, 50: the sum is 150 and there are 5 numbers, so the average is 150 ÷ 5 = 30.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the mean and the median?
The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted. The mean reacts to outliers; the median does not, which is why skewed data often reports a median.
Can I average negative numbers?
Yes. Negative values are included in the sum like any other, and the average can itself be negative if the negatives outweigh the positives.
Does the order of the numbers matter?
No. The sum is the same regardless of order, so the average is unaffected by how you list the values.
