How it works

daily amount ≈ 150 mL × weight in kg (about 2.5 oz per pound), capped near 32 oz/day · per feed = daily amount ÷ feeds per day.

A common guideline for full-term, formula-fed babies is about 150 mL of formula per kilogram of body weight per day — roughly 2.5 ounces per pound — divided across the day’s feeds. Daily intake is usually capped around 32 ounces because most babies do not need more, and appetite naturally settles as solids begin around six months. This is only an average starting point: breastfed babies and newborns in their first days differ, and every baby’s needs vary day to day, so feed on demand and watch hunger and fullness cues.

Worked example

A 10 lb baby is about 4.54 kg, so roughly 150 × 4.54 ≈ 680 mL (about 23 oz) a day. Split across 8 feeds that is around 85 mL — close to 3 oz — per feed.

Frequently asked questions

Does this apply to breastfed babies?

Not directly. Breastfed babies self-regulate and intake is hard to measure by volume, so these numbers are aimed at formula feeding. For breastfeeding, follow your baby’s cues and your provider’s or lactation consultant’s guidance.

How do I know my baby is getting enough?

Steady weight gain, regular wet and dirty nappies, and a content baby between feeds are the practical signs. If you are worried about intake or growth, check with your pediatrician rather than a formula alone.

Should I wake my newborn to hit these amounts?

Sometimes very young or small babies do need waking to feed, but this varies. Your pediatrician advises on feeding frequency for your baby — do not rely on a calculator for a newborn’s schedule.
