How it works

Total lb = hives × supers × frames × honey per frame · Gallons = total lb ÷ 12 · Jars = floor(total lb ÷ jar size)

A hive only gives surplus honey after it has stored enough for its own winter needs, so this figure is the harvestable extra from full honey supers, not the colony’s entire production. A well-drawn deep frame can hold 6–8 lb of honey and a medium frame around 3–4 lb, and honey weighs about 12 lb per US gallon because it is far denser than water. Real yields swing wildly with the nectar flow, weather, colony strength and your region — a strong hive in a good year may fill several supers while a struggling one yields nothing — so use conservative per-frame numbers and never strip a colony bare going into winter.

Worked example

Two hives, each with 2 medium supers of 10 frames at 3 lb per frame, yield 2 × 2 × 10 × 3 = 120 lb of honey. That is about 120 ÷ 12 = 10 gallons, or 120 one-pound jars.

Frequently asked questions

How much honey does one hive produce?

It varies enormously — a healthy hive in a good nectar flow might give 30–60 lb of surplus in a season, while a weak colony or a poor year yields little or none. Location, forage and management matter far more than any single rule.

How much honey should I leave for the bees?

Enough to survive winter, which is commonly 40–90 lb depending on your climate. Cold, long winters demand more. Always assess the colony’s stores first and harvest only the clear surplus above what they need.

How much does honey weigh?

About 12 lb per US gallon, or roughly 1.4 kg per litre — around 40% heavier than water because honey is a dense sugar solution. That is why a small jar feels surprisingly heavy.
