How it works

dose (mg) = weight (kg) × 2–4 mg/kg (the common rule 1 mg per lb = 2.2 mg/kg) · tablets = dose ÷ 25 mg (rounded to ¼) · liquid mL = dose ÷ 2.5 mg/mL

Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is an antihistamine vets use off-label for mild allergic reactions, insect stings, itching and motion sickness. Veterinary references such as the Merck Veterinary Manual list 2–4 mg/kg by mouth every 8–12 hours, and the everyday rule of 1 mg per pound sits at the low end of that range. Only plain diphenhydramine is safe: “D”, cold, sinus and “plus” products add decongestants such as pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine that are toxic to dogs, and some liquids contain alcohol or xylitol. Ask your vet first, especially for puppies, pregnant dogs and dogs with glaucoma, heart or prostate disease.

Worked example

A 10 kg dog at the usual 1 mg per lb (2.2 mg/kg): 10 × 2.2 = 22 mg per dose. Rounded to a practical amount that is 1 tablet of 25 mg (2.5 mg/kg), or 9 mL of children’s liquid (22.5 mg), given every 8–12 hours and no more than 3 times a day.

Frequently asked questions

How much Benadryl can I give my dog?

The usual guide is 1 mg per pound of body weight (about 2.2 mg/kg), 2–3 times a day; the veterinary range is 2–4 mg/kg every 8–12 hours. A 25 lb dog takes about one 25 mg tablet. Check with your vet before the first dose.

Which Benadryl is safe for dogs?

Only products whose single active ingredient is diphenhydramine. Avoid Benadryl-D, “Allergy Plus Congestion”, cold and sinus versions, and any liquid with alcohol or xylitol — read the inactive ingredients too.

How long does Benadryl take to work in dogs?

Usually 30–60 minutes, and the effect lasts about 8–12 hours. Drowsiness is the most common side effect; some dogs get a dry mouth, urinary retention or, rarely, excitement.

Can Benadryl treat a severe allergic reaction?

No. Swelling of the face, hives with breathing trouble, collapse or vomiting after a sting are emergencies — go to a vet immediately. Benadryl only helps mild reactions.
