Bowling Score Calculator — Frame-by-Frame Scorecard

Score a 10-pin bowling game frame by frame: type the balls (X for a strike, / for a spare, - for a miss) to get every frame score, the running total, the maximum score still possible, strike and spare stats, and series totals with handicap. A quick estimate from strike and spare counts is included too.

How it works

Strike frame = 10 + next two balls · Spare frame = 10 + next ball · Open frame = pins on both balls · 10th frame = all its balls (up to 3) · Score = Σ frame scores · Max possible = score with every remaining ball a strike (or the spare that finishes a frame)

Ten-pin scoring is chained. A strike (all ten pins with the first ball) is worth 10 plus whatever your next two balls knock down, and a spare (all ten with two balls) is worth 10 plus your next ball, so a frame’s value is often not known until a frame or two later. An open frame is just the pins you knocked down. The 10th frame is different: a strike or spare there earns one or two fill balls, and everything rolled in the 10th is simply added up, so twelve strikes in a row is the 300 maximum. Type your balls the way they appear on a scoring monitor — X for a strike, / for a spare, - for a miss, F for a foul — and the calculator checks every frame, scores it, and shows the running total. For a game in progress it also shows the best score you can still reach, which assumes strikes from here on (or a spare first, if you are mid-frame). Put several games on separate lines to get a series total, average and handicap total. If you only know roughly how many strikes and spares you throw, the estimate mode gives a ballpark instead.

Worked example

The game X 7/ 9- X -8 8/ -6 X X X81 scores 167. Frame 1 is a strike followed by 7 and 3, so 20; frame 2 is a spare followed by 9, so 19 (total 39); frame 3 is 9 (48); frame 4 is a strike followed by 0 and 8, so 18 (66); frame 5 is 8 (74); frame 6 is a spare plus 0, so 10 (84); frame 7 is 6 (90); frames 8 and 9 are strikes worth 30 and 28 (120, 148); and the 10th, X 8 1, adds 19 for 167. After only X 7/ 9- the score is 48 and the maximum still possible is 258: six more strikes worth 30 each in frames 4 to 9 (180) plus a perfect 10th frame (30) on top of the 48.

Frequently asked questions

How do you score a strike in bowling?

A strike is 10 plus the pins from your next two balls. A strike followed by two more strikes is worth 30; a strike followed by 7 and a spare is worth 20; a strike followed by 3 and 4 is worth 17.

How does the 10th frame work?

If you strike with the first ball of the 10th you get two more balls; if you spare you get one more. The 10th frame is simply the sum of its balls, so X X X there is 30 and 7 / 5 is 15. Without a strike or spare the game ends after two balls.

What is the maximum possible score?

A perfect game of 12 strikes in a row scores 300. For a game in progress, the calculator shows the best score still reachable by assuming every remaining ball is a strike (or a spare to finish a half-played frame).

How do I enter a split or a foul?

A split is scored like any other ball — type the number of pins knocked down. A foul counts as 0 pins: type F (or -). On a spare ball after a foul, / still means you knocked down all the pins left standing.

Can I score a whole series?

Yes. Put each game on its own line. You get each game’s score, the series total, the average of finished games, your strike and spare percentages, and the handicap total if you enter a handicap per game in More options.
