How it works

Break-even = (buy price × shares + buy fee + sell fee) ÷ shares

You only profit once the sale covers what you paid plus both commissions. Spreading those fees across your shares gives the price each share must reach just to break even.

Worked example

100 shares at $50 with $5 fees each way breaks even at $50.10.

Frequently asked questions

Do commission-free brokers change this?

With zero commissions, break-even is just your buy price — but watch for spreads and regulatory fees.

What about taxes?

This ignores taxes. Capital gains tax on a profit raises the price you need to keep a given after-tax return.
