Calving Interval Calculator — Days Open & Calves per Cow per Year

Work out a cow’s calving interval from two calving dates, the days open it implies, calves per cow per year and how it compares with the 365-day target for beef and dairy herds.

How it works

Calving interval = latest calving date − previous calving date · Days open = calving interval − gestation length · Calves per cow per year = 365 ÷ calving interval

The calving interval is the number of days between two successive calvings of the same cow. With a gestation of about 283 days, a cow must conceive within roughly 82 days of calving to hold the classic 365-day (12-month) target that gives one calf per cow per year. Beef herds aim for 365 days to keep a tight calving season; dairy herds usually accept 12.5–13 months (380–395 days). Every extra day open costs milk, calves and money, so the interval is one of the main herd-fertility indicators.

Worked example

A cow that calved on March 10, 2025 and again on April 2, 2026 has a calving interval of 388 days (12.7 months). With a 283-day gestation she was open for 105 days, which gives 0.94 calves per cow per year — rated "Good — up to 13 months". At the same interval her next calf would arrive on April 25, 2027.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good calving interval?

For beef cows the target is 365 days — one calf per cow per year. In dairy herds 12.5 to 13 months (about 380–395 days) is usually considered good, because high-yielding cows are often bred a little later. Intervals beyond 14 months (425 days) signal a fertility or heat-detection problem.

How many days open should a cow have?

About 80–85 days to reach a 12-month interval, or up to 110 days for a 13-month interval. Days open longer than that usually come from missed heats, low conception rates or poor body condition after calving.

How do I calculate the herd’s average calving interval?

Calculate each cow’s interval from her last two calvings and average them. Heifers that have calved only once have no interval yet and are left out, so a herd average can look better than it is if many cows were culled for failing to get pregnant.

How does the calving interval affect income?

Each extra day open delays the next calf and, in dairy cows, keeps the cow longer in low-yielding late lactation. Extension economists commonly estimate the cost at several dollars per day open for dairy cows.
