Canada GST / HST / PST Calculator
Canadian sales tax by province with 2026 GST, HST, PST, RST and QST rates. Add tax to a price, remove it from a tax-included total, or work back from the tax paid, with the federal and provincial parts split out, input tax credits for registrants and the same purchase in every province.
How it works
Tax = price × (GST/HST rate + PST/QST/RST rate) · Price before tax = tax-included total ÷ (1 + total rate) · Price from tax paid = tax ÷ total rate · HST = 5% federal part + provincial part · QST is charged on the price excluding GST
Canada layers a 5% federal GST with provincial sales taxes. Five provinces fold theirs into a single harmonized sales tax (HST): Ontario 13%, Nova Scotia 14% (since April 1, 2025), and New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island 15%. British Columbia (7% PST), Manitoba (7% RST), Saskatchewan (6% PST) and Quebec (9.975% QST) charge their own tax next to GST, and Alberta and the three territories charge GST only. These are the rates in effect in 2026. To add tax, the calculator applies each rate to the pre-tax price and rounds each tax to the cent. To remove tax from a total, it divides by one plus the combined rate. To work from the tax on a receipt, it divides the tax by the combined rate. Under More options you can mark an item as PST-exempt or zero-rated, add quantity, discount, delivery and an untaxed tip, see the input tax credit a GST/HST registrant can claim, and compare the same purchase across all provinces.
Worked example
$1,000 in Ontario: 13% HST = $130, total $1,130, of which $50 is the federal part and $80 the provincial part. The same $1,000 in Quebec is $50 GST + $99.75 QST = $1,149.75, and in British Columbia $50 GST + $70 PST = $1,120. Backing tax out of a $113 Ontario receipt gives 113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 before tax. If a BC receipt shows $36 of tax, the price was 36 ÷ 12% = $300. A GST/HST-registered business buying that $1,000 item in Ontario claims the $130 back as an input tax credit, so its net cost is $1,000; in BC it recovers only the $50 GST, so the cost is $1,070.

Frequently asked questions
What are the GST/HST and PST rates in 2026?
GST is 5% everywhere. HST is 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. British Columbia adds 7% PST, Manitoba 7% RST, Saskatchewan 6% PST and Quebec 9.975% QST. Alberta, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut charge only the 5% GST. No province changed its general rate between 2025 and 2026, apart from Nova Scotia’s cut to 14% in April 2025.
How do I remove GST/HST from a total?
Divide the total by one plus the combined rate. In Ontario, $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 before tax and $13 HST. Subtracting 13% of $113 would remove $14.69, which is too much. Choose Remove tax and the calculator splits the tax into its parts.
Which items are exempt?
Basic groceries, prescription drugs and many medical devices are zero-rated, and long-term residential rent and most health and educational services are exempt from GST/HST. Provinces exempt more from PST, and Ontario and the Atlantic HST provinces rebate the provincial part of HST at the till on items such as children’s clothing, diapers, car seats and printed books. Pick the matching option under Taxes that apply to this item.
Can a business get the sales tax back?
A GST/HST registrant claims input tax credits for the GST or HST it pays on business purchases, and in Quebec it also recovers QST as input tax refunds. PST in British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan generally cannot be recovered that way, so it stays a cost. Switch on the registrant option to see the credit and your net cost.
When do I have to register for GST/HST?
You must register once your taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters (the small-supplier threshold). Below that, registering is optional, but it lets you claim input tax credits.
How is tax charged on online purchases?
By the buyer’s province. Sellers ship to you at your province’s rate, and non-resident digital platforms and sellers above $30,000 in Canadian sales must register and charge it.
