Car Maintenance Cost Calculator
Add up oil changes, detailing and routine service across a year to see your real monthly and yearly upkeep cost.
How it works
Oil = (miles ÷ interval) × oil cost · Detailing = per-session × sessions · Total = oil + detailing + other service
Routine upkeep splits into distance-based items like oil changes, which scale with how far you drive, and calendar-based items like detailing and inspections, which recur regardless of mileage. Setting a realistic oil interval matters: modern full-synthetic oil often lasts 7,500–10,000 miles, so following an old 3,000-mile habit can double this line for no benefit. This covers scheduled maintenance and cosmetic care, not big unexpected repairs — a warranty or repair fund handles those.
Worked example
At 12,000 miles a year with $60 oil changes every 5,000 miles you get 2.4 changes, about $144. Two $150 detailing sessions add $300, and $400 of other service brings the total to $844 a year — roughly $70 a month, or 7¢ per mile.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I really change the oil?
Follow your owner’s manual, not the quick-lube sticker. Many modern engines on full-synthetic oil are rated for 7,500–10,000 miles; changing every 3,000 miles wastes money and oil for most drivers.
Is professional detailing worth budgeting for?
Regular detailing protects paint and interior surfaces, which helps resale value, but it is optional upkeep. Set the sessions per year to zero to see maintenance cost without it.
Does this include major repairs?
No — it covers scheduled maintenance and detailing. Budget separately for large repairs like transmissions or timing components, or use an extended warranty break-even analysis to decide how to cover them.
