Carbohydrate Needs Calculator
Convert your daily calorie target into grams of carbohydrate at a chosen percentage of calories, with the recommended 45–65% range for reference.
How it works
Carb grams = calories × carb% ÷ 4 · (carbohydrate provides 4 kcal per gram)
Carbohydrate supplies 4 kcal per gram, so grams are just the carbohydrate share of your calories divided by four. The Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range from the US dietary guidelines places carbohydrate at 45–65% of calories for adults, with a minimum of 130 g per day to cover the brain’s glucose needs. Active endurance athletes often sit at the high end, while lower-carb plans deliberately drop below the range.
Worked example
On a 2,000 kcal diet targeting 50% carbohydrate, that is 1,000 kcal from carbs. Divided by 4 kcal per gram gives 250 g of carbohydrate a day, comfortably inside the 45–65% band of 225–325 g.
Frequently asked questions
How many carbs should I eat per day?
For most adults, 45–65% of calories, which is roughly 225–325 g on a 2,000 kcal diet. Needs rise with activity and fall on low-carb approaches; the minimum to fuel the brain is about 130 g.
Do fibre and sugar count as carbohydrate?
Yes. Total carbohydrate on a label includes starch, sugars and fibre. Some people track net carbs by subtracting fibre, but this calculator uses total carbohydrate.
Why divide by 4?
Carbohydrate yields about 4 kcal of energy per gram, the same as protein, while fat yields 9. That conversion turns a calorie share into grams.
