How it works

Net burn = monthly expenses − monthly revenue · Runway (months) = cash on hand ÷ net burn

Runway is how long your cash lasts at the current net burn — expenses minus whatever revenue offsets them. It is the single most-watched number for a startup that spends more than it earns, because it sets the deadline to reach profitability or raise more money. If revenue already covers expenses the runway is effectively infinite, so this calculator reports that case separately rather than dividing by zero.

Worked example

With $240,000 in the bank, $20,000 of monthly revenue and $60,000 of monthly expenses, net burn is 60,000 − 20,000 = $40,000. Runway is 240,000 ÷ 40,000 = 6 months, so the cash is projected to run out about six months from now.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy runway?

Many investors suggest keeping 12–18 months of runway so you always have time to hit milestones or raise a new round before cash gets tight. Below six months, fundraising or cost cuts usually become urgent.

What is the difference between gross and net burn?

Gross burn is total monthly cash spent. Net burn subtracts revenue, so it reflects how fast your cash balance actually shrinks. Runway is calculated from net burn.

Does runway assume revenue stays flat?

This simple version does — it holds revenue and expenses constant. Real runway shifts as revenue grows or costs change, so revisit it whenever your monthly numbers move.
