How it works

Length (mm) = inches × 25.4 · Chain = length − clasp · Links = round(chain ÷ link inner length) · Length with whole links = links × link + clasp · Necklace drop ≈ (length − neck size) ÷ 2

Necklace styles are named for where they sit. A collar hugs the middle of the neck, a choker rests at its base, a princess falls to the collarbone, a matinee reaches above the bust, an opera to the bust or below, and a rope to the waist. Each has a conventional length range: the ones used here follow pearl and chain trade usage (collar 12–13 in, choker 14–16, princess 17–19, matinee 20–24, opera 28–34, rope 36 in or more), and some retailers shift the names by an inch or two. Men’s chains usually run 20–24 in, bracelets 6.5–8 in and anklets 9–11 in. Once you fix the finished length, the number of links is the chain length, after taking off the clasp and end rings, divided by the length each link adds. Because you can only use whole links, the calculator also shows the length you actually get and how many links to add or remove to reach the nearest store length. Add a neck size under More options to see roughly how far the necklace drops below the base of the neck (half the slack, since the chain hangs as a loop), or a wrist or ankle size to check the ease on a bracelet or anklet.

Worked example

An 18 in princess chain is 18 × 25.4 = 457.2 mm. With links that each add 4 mm and no clasp allowance, 457.2 ÷ 4 = 114.3, so you need 114 links, which make 456 mm (17.95 in). The length sits within the princess range of 17–19 in and matches the 18 in store length.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a necklace length?

Match the style to where you want it to sit and the neckline it goes with. Princess (17–19 in, about 43–48 cm) is the most versatile everyday length; matinee and opera lengths suit higher necklines and layering, and chokers suit open necklines.

What is the most popular necklace length?

18 in (about 46 cm) is the most common length for women’s pendant chains, and 20–22 in (51–56 cm) for men’s chains.

What is “link inner length”?

It is how much each added link extends the chain, not the full outer size, because links overlap. Pull 10 links straight, measure the span and divide by 10.

Should I count the clasp in the length?

Yes. Store lengths include the clasp, so enter the clasp and jump rings under More options; the calculator takes them off before counting links.

How do I find my neck size for a choker?

Wrap a soft tape or string around the base of your neck and measure it. For a choker add about 2 in (5 cm); for a collar that hugs the neck add about 0.5 in (1.3 cm).

What size bracelet should I get?

Measure your wrist snugly and add about 0.5–1 in (1.3–2.5 cm). The average women’s wrist is about 6–6.5 in, so 7 in is the most common bracelet length.
