Chinese Gender Predictor (Chinese Gender Chart Calculator)
Look up the traditional Chinese gender chart: we convert the mother's birth date and the conception date to the Chinese lunar calendar, find her lunar age and the lunar month, and show the folklore prediction — plus what the science says.
How it works
lunar (Chinese) age = lunar year of conception − lunar year of mother's birth + 1 · lunar month = month of the Chinese calendar on the conception date (a leap month counts as its number) · prediction = traditional chart cell [lunar age 18–45, lunar month 1–12]
The Chinese gender chart, said to date from the Qing dynasty, crosses the mother's lunar age with the lunar month of conception. Lunar age counts a baby as 1 at birth and adds a year at each Chinese New Year, so it is usually 1–2 years more than the Western age; the calculator converts both dates to the Chinese calendar for you. It is fun, but it is folklore: when researchers checked it against 2.8 million Swedish births, it predicted the sex correctly about 50% of the time — the same as guessing.
Worked example
A mother born on May 10, 1996 who conceived on May 1, 2026: both dates fall after Chinese New Year of their year, so her lunar age is 2026 − 1996 + 1 = 31, and May 1, 2026 is in the 3rd lunar month. Row 31, month 3 of the chart says Boy — a 50/50 guess in reality.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the Chinese gender chart?
About 50%. A University of Michigan-led study of 2.8 million births in Sweden (Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2010) found the chart predicted the baby's sex correctly 49.9% of the time — no better than flipping a coin.
How do I calculate my lunar age?
In the traditional Chinese system you are 1 year old at birth and gain a year at each Chinese New Year, not on your birthday. So lunar age = lunar year of the date − lunar year of your birth + 1, which is usually your Western age plus 1 or 2.
What if I conceived in a leap month?
Some Chinese years have a 13th, repeated (leap) month. Most chart users count a leap month as the month it repeats, which is what this calculator does; some count it as the next month, so check both cells if you are curious.
How can I really find out my baby's sex?
A NIPT (cell-free DNA) blood test from about 10 weeks, or the anatomy ultrasound at about 18–22 weeks, are reliable. Old wives' tales and charts are entertainment only.

For fun only. The Chinese gender chart is folklore: large studies show it is right about half the time, the same as a coin flip. Only ultrasound, NIPT blood tests or other medical tests can tell a baby's sex.
