How it works

Total points = chores × points/chore · Per child = total ÷ kids · Allowance = points × per-point rate

A points system makes chores feel fair by rewarding effort rather than just ticking boxes: easy jobs are worth one or two points, medium ones three, and tough or unpleasant ones five. Multiply the weekly chores by their average point value to get the total points on offer, then divide across the children to see a per-child target. Attaching a small money value per point turns it into an allowance that scales with what each child actually did — and setting the rate to zero keeps it a screen-time or privilege currency instead.

Worked example

20 chores a week worth an average of 3 points is 60 points. Shared between 2 children that is 30 points each and 10 chores each. At $0.25 a point that earns each child $7.50 a week, for a $15 weekly allowance budget.

Frequently asked questions

How should I assign points to chores?

Tie points to effort and duration: a 5-minute job like feeding a pet is 1 point, a 15-minute one like loading the dishwasher is 3, and a big task like mowing or a full room clean is 5. Post the point values so expectations are clear.

Should every chore earn money?

Many families pay only for "extra" chores and treat basic ones (making your bed, clearing your plate) as unpaid contributions to the household. Set the per-point rate to zero for those and use points purely to track fairness or unlock privileges.

How do I keep it fair between different-aged kids?

Give older children higher-point tasks rather than simply more tasks, so the point totals stay comparable while chores match ability. You can also set a weekly point target each child must hit rather than splitting evenly.
