How it works

Cups per bag = bag weight ÷ dose · Bean cost per cup = bag price ÷ cups per bag · Cost per cup = bean cost + add-ons

The dominant cost of a home cup is the coffee dose, found by dividing the bag weight by the grams you brew per cup to get cups per bag. Splitting the bag price over those cups gives the bean cost, and adding milk, filter and any pod cost gives the all-in figure. Even premium beans rarely push a home cup above a dollar, which is what makes home brewing so much cheaper than a café.

Worked example

A $14, 340 g bag at 15 g per cup yields 340 ÷ 15 ≈ 22.7 cups. Beans cost 14 ÷ 22.7 ≈ $0.62 per cup; add $0.15 of milk and it is about $0.77 a cup — roughly $46 a month at two cups a day.

Frequently asked questions

How much coffee is one cup?

A common ratio is about 15 g of ground coffee for a 240 ml mug, though strong brewers use up to 18 g. Enter your own dose to match how you brew.

Does this include the machine and electricity?

No — it is the per-cup consumable cost (beans plus add-ons). The machine is a one-time cost you can amortise separately, and the electricity to heat water is a fraction of a cent per cup.

How does this compare to buying out?

A café cup is typically $4–5. Even a $1 home cup saves $3–4 each time, which is why the monthly figure here is a useful reality check against a daily coffee-shop habit.
