How it works

First-year cost = today’s cost × (1 + inflation)^years-until-enrollment · Total = Σ today’s cost × (1 + inflation)^(years-until + k) for each study year k = 0 … years-of-study − 1

College costs have historically risen faster than general inflation, so the sticker price years from now can be far above today’s. This calculator inflates today’s annual cost to the year enrollment begins, then adds a further year of inflation for each successive year of study, since prices keep climbing while your child is enrolled. The total is the sum of those inflated yearly costs — the real target a savings plan needs to hit.

Worked example

A program costing $25,000 a year today, 10 years from enrollment at 5% college inflation, will cost about $40,722 in the first year. Adding the next three years at $42,758, $44,896 and $47,141, the full four-year bill totals roughly $175,519 — versus $100,000 at today’s prices.

Frequently asked questions

What inflation rate should I use for college?

College costs have often risen 4–6% a year, faster than general inflation of 2–3%. Using 5% is a common planning assumption, but check recent trends for the type of school you are targeting, since public and private costs differ.

Why is the total more than four times the first-year cost?

Because prices keep rising during the years your child is enrolled. Each successive study year is inflated one more year, so later years cost more than the first — the total compounds beyond simply multiplying the first year by four.

How much should I save to cover this?

Pair this projected cost with a 529 or investment calculator to find the monthly savings needed. Aiming to cover a portion — with grants, scholarships and current income covering the rest — is a realistic strategy for many families.
