How it works

Value = NM (9.2) price × grade multiplier · Net = value − grading cost

Comic values move steeply with grade, and the market prices each grade as a rough multiple of a near-mint reference. This tool uses a representative multiplier set anchored at 9.2 = ×1.0, so a 9.8 typically commands a large premium and mid-grade copies sell at a fraction. The multipliers here are generic; for hot keys the spread between 9.6 and 9.8 can be far wider, so treat this as a first estimate and always check recent sales for the specific book.

Worked example

A book with a $100 NM guide price, graded at 9.8 (×1.6), is worth about $160. Subtract a $40 grading and shipping cost and the net is roughly $120 — worth it only if you are confident the raw copy will actually grade 9.8.

Frequently asked questions

What do CGC grades mean?

CGC grades run from 0.5 (poor) to 10.0 (gem mint) on a numeric scale. 9.8 is near mint/mint, 9.2 is near mint minus, and anything 9.6+ is considered high grade and carries strong premiums for desirable issues.

Are these multipliers exact?

No — they are typical ratios for a generic book. Key issues, first appearances and rare high grades can show much larger jumps between adjacent grades, while common books barely move. Use completed-sale data for anything valuable.

Is it worth paying to grade a comic?

Only when the expected graded value minus the fee clearly beats the raw price, and when you are confident of the grade. Grading a modern common that will fetch $30 in a slab rarely covers the cost.
