How it works

Minutes/year = one-way min × 2 × days/week × weeks/year · Hours/year = minutes ÷ 60 · Value = hours × hourly rate

Commuting is unpaid time that rarely shows up in any budget, yet a half-hour each way is a full hour a day that compounds fast across a year. Converting it to hours makes the scale visible, and multiplying by a value for your time — often your after-tax hourly wage — turns it into a number you can weigh against rent, a shorter-commute job, or remote work. Expressing the same total as full 24-hour days tends to be the figure that actually lands.

Worked example

A 30-minute each-way commute is 60 minutes a day. Over 5 days and 48 weeks that is 30 × 2 × 5 × 48 = 14,400 minutes, or 240 hours a year. At $25 an hour that time is worth $6,000 — the equivalent of 10 full 24-hour days.

Frequently asked questions

What hourly rate should I use for my time?

A common choice is your after-tax hourly wage, since that is what an hour of your work actually nets. If you would use commute time for leisure rather than earning, use what that time is personally worth to you — many people value non-work hours well above their wage.

Should I include the cost of driving too?

This calculator values only your time. Fuel, tolls, transit fares and vehicle wear are separate out-of-pocket costs — add them from a commute-cost tool to see the full picture of what getting to work costs you each year.

How does this help me decide on a job or move?

Compare the yearly time value against the trade-off: a raise that comes with a longer commute, or higher rent for a shorter one. If moving closer costs less per year than the commute time it saves, the shorter commute is effectively paying you.
