How it works

Total uses = times per week × 52 × years · Cost per use = price ÷ total uses

Sticker price alone is a poor guide to value — an item’s real cost is what you pay each time you actually use it. Multiplying weekly use by 52 and the years you will keep it gives lifetime uses, and dividing the price by that number gives cost per use. It reframes the classic "buy cheap or buy quality" question: a $120 item used three times a week for two years costs pennies per use, while a $30 gadget used twice and forgotten costs $15 each time. It is also the honest test for subscriptions, memberships and rarely-worn clothes.

Worked example

A $120 kitchen appliance used 3 times a week for 2 years gets 3 × 52 × 2 = 312 uses. That is 120 ÷ 312 ≈ $0.385 per use — about 38 cents each time, or $60 a year.

Frequently asked questions

Why is cost per use more useful than price?

Price is a one-time number; cost per use spreads it over how much you actually get out of the item. It explains why a well-made tool you use constantly can be cheaper in the long run than a bargain one you barely touch — and why an unused gym membership is expensive no matter how low the monthly fee.

Should I include repair or running costs?

For a fuller picture, add maintenance, batteries, or consumables to the purchase price before dividing. This basic version uses the purchase price alone, which is enough to compare most everyday buys.

How do I use this for clothes or gear?

Estimate honestly how many times you will wear or use it over its life. A $200 coat worn 100 times a winter for several years is a couple of dollars per wear; a $60 outfit worn once for an event is $60 per wear. The math often favours quality staples over impulse buys.
