How it works

Target value = total × target% · Trade = target value − current value (buy if positive, sell if negative)

Rebalancing keeps a portfolio at its intended risk level by trimming whatever has run up and topping up whatever has lagged. This tool compares one asset’s current dollar value against its target share of the whole portfolio and tells you the exact trade to close the gap. Because it forces you to sell high and buy low mechanically, disciplined rebalancing removes emotion from the decision — though frequent rebalancing in crypto can rack up trading fees and taxable events.

Worked example

A $10,000 portfolio should hold 60% ($6,000) in one asset, but that asset is now worth $7,000 (70%). The trade is 6,000 − 7,000 = −$1,000, so you sell $1,000 of it to correct a +10% drift.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I rebalance?

Common approaches are calendar-based (quarterly or annually) or threshold-based (only when an asset drifts more than a set percentage from target). Rebalancing less often reduces fees and taxable events; rebalancing on a threshold reacts to big moves.

Does rebalancing improve returns?

Its main job is controlling risk, not maximizing returns. It can add a small “rebalancing bonus” in volatile, mean-reverting markets, but in a strong one-directional trend it can lag simply holding the winner.

What about taxes and fees?

Selling to rebalance can trigger capital gains and trading fees, especially in crypto. Where possible, rebalance with new contributions (directing fresh money to the underweight asset) to avoid selling.
