How it works
cubic yards = length(ft) × width(ft) × depth(ft) ÷ 27 · depth in inches ÷ 12 first
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet — a block 3 ft on every side. Multiply length, width and depth in feet for cubic feet, then divide by 27. Because depth is usually the odd one out (given in inches for slabs and beds), the unit switch converts it to feet before the volume is computed.
Worked example
A 10 × 10 ft area at 4 in deep: 4 in is 0.333 ft, so 10 × 10 × 0.333 = 33.3 cu ft, ÷ 27 = 1.23 cubic yards.
Frequently asked questions
How many cubic feet in a cubic yard?
27. A yard is 3 feet, and 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet. This is the single most useful conversion in bulk-material ordering, since dimensions are measured in feet but material is sold by the yard.
Why is depth so often in inches?
Slabs, gravel bases, mulch and topsoil are all shallow relative to their footprint, so inches read more naturally. Just remember to divide by 12 before multiplying, or use the unit switch here to avoid the mistake.
Should I round my order up?
Yes — suppliers sell in quarter- and half-yard increments, and it is far better to have a little extra than to stop a pour or come up short on a bed. Round up to the next quarter yard at least.
