How it works
speed = distance ÷ time · minutes per mile = time ÷ distance
Average speed is total distance over total elapsed time, so stops at lights and snack breaks count against it unless you use moving time. Cyclists usually quote mph in the US and km/h elsewhere (multiply mph by 1.609). Minutes per mile is the same number flipped — handy for estimating how long a route will take.
Worked example
A 24-mile ride in 1 hour 30 minutes: 24 ÷ 1.5 = 16.00 mph, which is 25.75 km/h — 3:45 per mile, so 10 more miles would take about 37:30.

What is a good average cycling speed?
On flat roads: beginners 10–14 mph, regular riders 15–18, strong club cyclists 19–22, and racers hold 23+ mph for hours. Hills, wind and traffic stops easily swing an average by 3–5 mph.

Moving time measures fitness; elapsed time predicts arrival. Use moving time to compare rides, elapsed time to plan how long a route takes door to door.
How much do aero position and drafting matter?
A lot — air resistance grows with the square of speed. Riding in a paceline can save 20–30% of your power at the same speed, which is why group averages beat solo ones.
