How it works
Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60
Payroll and billing use decimal hours, not hours and minutes. Divide the minutes by 60 and add to the hours — so 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 is 0.5 and 45 is 0.75.
Worked example
8 hours 45 minutes = 8 + 45/60 = 8.75 decimal hours.
Frequently asked questions
What is 20 minutes in decimal?

Why do timesheets use it?
Multiplying a decimal by an hourly rate is straightforward; hours-and-minutes would need extra conversion.
