Dishwasher Loads Per Week Calculator
Work out how many dishwasher cycles your household runs each week from the number of people, meals eaten at home and your machine’s place-setting capacity.
How it works
Loads = people × place settings/day × 7 ÷ dishwasher capacity
Dishwasher demand tracks how many place settings the household dirties each day set against how many the machine holds. Waiting until the machine is genuinely full before running it is the single biggest efficiency lever: a modern dishwasher on a full load typically uses less water than washing the same dishes by hand. Eco cycles trade a longer run time for lower water and energy use.
Worked example
Three people at 3 place settings a day produce 3 × 3 × 7 = 63 settings a week. A 12-setting machine handles that in about 5.3 loads a week, filling up roughly every 1.3 days.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a place setting?
A place setting is the crockery and cutlery for one person at one meal — typically a dinner plate, side plate, bowl, glass, cup, saucer, and a knife, fork and spoons. Capacity ratings on dishwashers are quoted in these standard settings.
Should I run the dishwasher every day?
Only if it is full. A modern dishwasher uses roughly the same water and energy whether half or fully loaded, so running partial loads wastes both. If it fills slowly, use a rinse-only setting to keep dishes from smelling until you have enough for a full cycle.
Is a dishwasher cheaper than hand-washing?
For full loads, yes — an efficient dishwasher usually uses less hot water than washing the same number of dishes under a running tap, and heats water more efficiently.
