How it works

party budget = per-character threshold(level, difficulty) × party size

Fifth-edition encounter building starts with an XP budget: each character contributes a threshold that depends on their level and the difficulty you want, and the party budget is simply the sum. You then pick monsters whose combined XP (before the multiple-monster multiplier) fits that budget. Because thresholds climb faster than a single monster’s XP, higher-level parties can safely face nastier fights, and a "deadly" budget is a real risk of a character going down — not a guaranteed kill.

Worked example

A party of 4 level-5 characters aiming for a medium fight: the level-5 medium threshold is 500 XP each, so 500 × 4 = 2,000 XP of monsters. A hard fight would be 750 × 4 = 3,000 XP.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include the encounter multiplier for multiple monsters?

No. This gives the raw XP budget. When you add several monsters, 5e multiplies their combined XP (×1.5 for a pair, ×2 for 3–6, and so on) before comparing to the budget, so a group of weak monsters is more dangerous than the raw total suggests.

What if my party has mixed levels?

Compute each character’s threshold at their own level and add them up. Using the average level is a quick approximation that works when levels are close.

Is a deadly encounter a guaranteed death?

No — "deadly" means a real chance that a character drops or the party is seriously threatened, not certain death. Terrain, action economy and party tactics swing the outcome a lot.
