How it works

Crate length = dog length (nose to tail base) + clearance · crate height = dog height (floor to head) + clearance

A crate should let a dog stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably — but no larger, since extra room encourages a puppy to soil one corner and sleep in the other. Measure the dog nose-to-tail-base and floor-to-head, then add a few inches of clearance so it fits without cramping. For a growing puppy, buy for the adult size and use a divider to shrink the space until it grows in.

Worked example

A dog measuring 24" long and 18" tall, with 4" of clearance, needs a crate about 28" long and 22" tall. That rounds to a standard 30" (Medium) crate, the nearest stock size that clears the measurements.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure my dog for a crate?

Measure length from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail (not the tail itself) and height from the floor to the top of the head or ears while the dog sits. Add 2–4 inches to each.

Can a crate be too big?

For house-training, yes. A crate with far more room than needed lets a puppy potty in one end and rest in the other, which slows training. Use a divider panel to size it down as the puppy grows.

What size for a puppy that will grow?

Estimate the adult length and height (breed guides help) and buy for that, then use a divider so the current space is just big enough to stand, turn and lie down.
