Dog Walking Calories Calculator
Roughly how many calories your dog burns on a walk, from its weight and the distance you cover together.
How it works
Calories ≈ 0.8 × weight (kg) × distance (km)
A walking animal spends energy roughly in proportion to how much mass it moves and how far it moves it, so a heavier dog or a longer walk burns more. A useful rule of thumb is about 0.8 kcal per kilogram of body weight per kilometre of easy-paced walking. It is an estimate — terrain, pace, breed and whether the dog trots or plods all shift the real figure — but it is enough to gauge how much a walk offsets a treat.
Worked example
A 30 lb dog is about 13.6 kg. On a 2-mile walk (3.22 km) it burns roughly 0.8 × 13.6 × 3.22 ≈ 35 kcal — a bit more than one small biscuit’s worth.
Frequently asked questions
How many calories does my dog burn walking?
As a rough guide, about 0.8 kcal per kilogram of body weight per kilometre. A mid-size dog on a couple of miles burns only a few dozen calories, so walks help fitness more than they burn off overfeeding.
Does pace or terrain change the number?
Yes. Brisk pace, hills, sand or snow raise the burn well above the easy-walk estimate, while a slow sniff-heavy stroll lowers it. Treat the result as a ballpark.
Should I feed my dog more on walk days?
Usually not much — the extra burn from a normal walk is modest. Only working dogs or very long, vigorous outings need a meaningful food increase; check with your vet.
