How it works

Yearly = standard × (renewal + privacy) + premium × (premium renewal + privacy) · Total = yearly × years

Domains are a small but perpetual cost, and the trap is budgeting from the discounted first-year price rather than the renewal price, which is often several times higher. Multiply each domain by its true recurring renewal, add WHOIS privacy where the registrar still charges for it, and separate out any premium names whose renewals stay elevated every year. Across a portfolio and a few years the total adds up, and forgetting a renewal risks losing a name to a drop-catcher — so the budget is really insurance against a lapse.

Worked example

Five domains renewing at $14 with free privacy is $70 a year. Add one premium name at $100 and the standard count drops to four (4 × $14 = $56) plus $100, for $156 a year, or $468 over three years.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the renewal price higher than what I first paid?

Registrars advertise a low first-year promotional price to win the registration, then charge the standard renewal — often $10–20 for common TLDs and much more for premium ones — every year after. Always budget from the renewal price shown in the registrar’s pricing table, not the intro offer.

Should I register for multiple years up front?

Multi-year registration locks in today’s price and removes the risk of forgetting a renewal, which can cost you the domain. It ties up cash and does not usually save money per year, but for names you definitely intend to keep, the reduced lapse risk is often worth it. Auto-renew plus a monitored payment method achieves much of the same safety.

Is WHOIS privacy still a separate cost?

Many registrars now include privacy free, but some still charge a few dollars a year per domain, and certain TLDs restrict or forbid it. Enter your registrar’s actual privacy fee; across a large portfolio even a few dollars each adds a noticeable line to the budget.
