How it works

time = file size (MB) × 8 ÷ speed (Mbps)

The trap in every download estimate is the unit: connection speeds use megabits per second (Mb), file sizes use megabytes (MB), and one byte is 8 bits. Convert the file to megabits — multiply MB by 8, or GB by 8,000 — then divide by the line speed. Real downloads run a bit slower than the ideal because of protocol overhead, server limits and shared traffic.

Worked example

A 100 GB game at 100 Mbps: 100,000 MB × 8 = 800,000 megabits ÷ 100 = 8,000 seconds — about 2 hr 13 min. On a 500 Mbps plan the same file takes under 27 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my download slower than this estimate?

The estimate is the ceiling of your plan. Wireless signal loss, the server’s own upload cap, other devices on your network, and 5–10% protocol overhead all shave real-world speed — testing your actual throughput and re-running the numbers gets closer.

Is 100 Mbps fast enough for big downloads?

It moves 12.5 MB every second — about 45 GB per hour. Fine for most uses; people who regularly pull 100+ GB files are the ones who feel the jump to 500 Mbps or gigabit service.

MBps vs Mbps — which does my download manager show?

Download managers and browsers almost always show megaBYTES per second (MB/s), which is why a "500 Mbps" connection tops out around 62 MB/s on screen. Both are correct — they differ by the factor of 8.
