How it works
Print inches = pixels ÷ DPI
Print sharpness depends on how many pixels land in each inch. 300 DPI is the standard for crisp photos; large prints viewed from far away can drop to 150 DPI. Dividing pixels by the DPI gives the maximum quality size.
Worked example
A 4000×3000 image at 300 DPI prints at about 13.3 × 10 inches.
Frequently asked questions
Can I print bigger than this?
Yes, but the DPI drops and detail softens. Big wall prints are fine at 150 DPI because you stand back.
Is DPI the same as PPI?
Closely related — PPI is on-screen pixel density, DPI is dots the printer lays down. For sizing, they’re used the same way.
