How it works

Drops per minute = flow rate(mL/h) × drop factor(gtt/mL) ÷ 60

When you already know the hourly flow rate (from an order or a pump) but the fluid runs on a manual gravity set, you regulate it by counting drops. Multiply the mL/hour by the tubing’s drop factor and divide by 60 to convert an hour into minutes. Unlike the volume-and-time method, this starts straight from a rate — handy for continuous fluids ordered simply as “mL/h.” Confirm the drop factor printed on the set you are using.

Worked example

A fluid ordered at 125 mL/h on 15 gtt/mL tubing: (125 × 15) ÷ 60 = 1,875 ÷ 60 ≈ 31 drops per minute. On 20 gtt/mL tubing the same rate is (125 × 20) ÷ 60 ≈ 42 drops per minute.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the IV drip rate calculator?

That one starts from a total volume and a total time; this one starts from a flow rate already in mL/hour. Both use the same drop factor and reach a drops-per-minute setting — use whichever matches how your order is written.

Why divide by 60?

The flow rate is per hour but drops are counted per minute, so you convert the hour into 60 minutes. Multiplying by the drop factor turns millilitres into drops; dividing by 60 turns the hourly figure into a per-minute one.

How do I check the set is running right?

Count the drops falling in the drip chamber for a full 60 seconds against a watch and adjust the roller clamp until it matches the calculated rate. Recheck periodically, since gravity sets drift when the bag height, line or patient position changes.
