Engine Hours to Miles Calculator

Convert engine hours to kilometres or miles for cars, trucks, police vehicles, boats and tractors: distance from average speed, idle time counted as wear-equivalent distance, and real average speed from the odometer.

How it works

driving hours = engine hours × (1 − idle share) · distance = driving hours × average moving speed · wear-equivalent = distance + idle hours × 33 mi (53 km) · average speed = odometer ÷ engine hours

Engine hour meters count time with the engine running, whether the vehicle is moving or not, so converting hours to distance needs an average speed. For a road vehicle, distance is the moving hours times the average moving speed; a city car averages 25–35 km/h, mixed driving 40–50 km/h. Idling adds hours but no distance, yet still wears the engine: Ford's guidance for its police vehicles equates one hour of idling to about 33 miles (53 km) of driving, which is why fleet buyers look at both numbers. If you know the odometer reading, dividing it by the hours gives the vehicle's true average (shown overall and over moving hours only).

Worked example

1,500 engine hours with 20% idling and a 40 km/h moving average: 1,200 driving hours × 40 = 48,000 km driven; adding 300 idle hours × 53.1 km gives a wear-equivalent of 63,930 km.

Frequently asked questions

How many miles is 1 engine hour?

It depends on how the vehicle is used: about 25–35 miles for typical mixed driving (average speed 25–35 mph), much less for city or idle-heavy use and up to 50–60 miles for highway trucks.

What is the 33 miles per idle hour rule?

Ford states that one hour of idling causes engine wear comparable to about 33 miles of driving, and uses it for police interceptors. It is a rule of thumb for oil-change and warranty planning, not a law of physics.

Are high engine hours bad on a used car?

Compare hours with the odometer: an average below about 20 mph (30 km/h) means lots of idling or short trips — more engine wear and oil dilution than the mileage suggests.

How do boats and tractors convert hours to miles?

Usually they do not: maintenance is scheduled by hours. If you need a figure, multiply working hours by an average speed (for boats about 15–25 knots while planing, tractors 5–10 km/h in the field).
