How it works
Gas = miles ÷ mpg × gas price; EV = miles ÷ (mi/kWh) × electricity price
Both cars’ running cost is distance divided by efficiency, times the fuel price. Electricity is usually far cheaper per mile than gas, but the gap depends on local prices and how efficient each vehicle is.
Worked example
12,000 mi in a 30 mpg car at $3.50 costs $1,400; an EV at 3.5 mi/kWh and $0.15 costs $514 — saving ~$886.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include the purchase price?
No — this is fuel/energy only. EVs often cost more up front but less to run and maintain.
What about home vs public charging?
Public fast charging costs more per kWh; enter your blended rate for a realistic figure.
