How it works

Paneled length = total − (gates × gate width) · Panels = ⌈paneled length ÷ panel width⌉ · Posts = panels + 1 + gates

Pre-built fence sections come in fixed widths (often 6 or 8 ft), so the panel count is the paneled length divided by the panel width, rounded up — with the gate openings subtracted first, since gates are framed separately rather than filled by a panel. Posts sit between and at the ends of the run: one to start, one after every panel, and an extra post at each gate opening so the gate has something to hang from and latch to.

Worked example

A 100 ft fence with one 4 ft gate has 96 ft of paneled run. In 8 ft panels that is ⌈96 ÷ 8⌉ = 12 panels, and the posts are 12 + 1 + 1 = 14.

Frequently asked questions

How many posts do I need for a fence?

As a rule you need one more post than panels for a straight run — a post at each end and one between every pair of panels. Add a post for each gate opening, and add extra posts at corners and direction changes.

Do panels come in standard widths?

Yes. Most pre-built wood and vinyl fence panels are 6 or 8 feet wide; metal and some privacy systems vary. Match the panel width to your post spacing, and cut one end panel to length if the run does not divide evenly.

What about corners and slopes?

Corners need their own posts and can waste part of a panel, so add posts where the fence turns. On a slope you either "step" or "rack" the panels, which slightly changes how much length each panel covers — measure along the ground and allow a little extra.
