Baseball Fielding Percentage Calculator
Fielding percentage from putouts, assists and errors, plus total chances, range factor per game and how it compares with league norms by position.
How it works
FPCT = (putouts + assists) ÷ (putouts + assists + errors); range factor = (PO + A) ÷ games
Fielding percentage measures how often a fielder converts the chances he reaches; it says nothing about the balls he never gets to, which is why range factor and modern metrics like Outs Above Average exist. Norms vary sharply by position — third basemen and shortstops handle hard, hurried plays and post lower percentages than first basemen.
Worked example
210 PO + 385 A over 607 chances with 12 errors = .980, about seven points above the shortstop norm.
Frequently asked questions
Is a higher fielding percentage always better?
Not necessarily — a fielder with little range makes fewer errors because he attempts fewer difficult plays.
What is a Gold Glove level?
Depends on position: shortstops around .980+, third basemen .970+, outfielders .990+ alongside strong range numbers.
