How it works

match power to the heavier of: the tier covering your line test (lb) and the tier covering your lure weight (oz)

Rod “power” is its resistance to bending under load, and it should match both the line you fish and the lure you throw. Matching only the lure can leave you under-gunned for the line’s breaking strength, so this tool checks both ratings and recommends the heavier tier, ensuring the blank can cast the lure and fight a fish on that line without over- or under-loading. Power pairs with action (how far down the blank it bends) — power sets how much weight, action sets where it flexes.

Worked example

With 10-lb line and a 3/8-oz (0.375) lure: the line falls in the medium-light window and the lure at the top of medium-light, so a medium-light rod is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

What is rod power?

Power is how much force it takes to bend the rod — its lifting strength. Ultralight bends under a few ounces; heavy resists many pounds. It is rated against line test and lure weight ranges printed on the blank.

How is power different from action?

Power is how much the rod resists bending; action is where along the blank it bends. A fast-action rod flexes near the tip, a slow-action one bends deep — independent of its power rating.

Should I match power to line or lure?

To both. A rod under-powered for your line can fail on the hookset or fight, and one over-powered for tiny lures casts poorly. Choosing the heavier of the two ratings covers both.
