How it works

Pip value = pip size × trade size (units) × (account currency per quote currency)

A pip is the smallest standard price increment — the 4th decimal on most pairs, the 2nd decimal on yen pairs. Multiply that increment by the number of units you trade to get the pip value in the quote currency, then convert to your account currency using the quote-to-account rate. Because the calculation is linear in trade size, a standard lot (100,000 units) is worth ten times a mini lot on the same pair.

Worked example

On a 100,000-unit (1 standard lot) EUR/USD trade with a pip size of 0.0001 and a USD account, each pip is 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10. A 100-pip move is therefore worth $1,000.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a standard-lot pip usually about $10?

For a 100,000-unit trade on a pair quoted to four decimals, one pip is 0.0001 × 100,000 = 10 units of the quote currency. When the quote currency is (or is near) the US dollar, that lands around $10 per pip.

How is the pip value different on JPY pairs?

Yen pairs are quoted to two decimals, so one pip is 0.01 rather than 0.0001. Select the 0.01 pip size and the calculator scales the value accordingly.

When do I need the conversion rate?

Only when the quote currency differs from your account currency. If you trade EUR/GBP but fund your account in USD, enter the GBP→USD rate so the pip value is expressed in dollars.
