How it works
V = (1/3) × π × h × (R² + R·r + r²)
A frustum is a cone with the tip sliced off. Its volume blends the two circular ends through the R² + R·r + r² term, reducing to a cylinder when the radii are equal and a cone when the top radius is zero.
Worked example
With R=6, r=3, h=10: V = (1/3)π·10·(36+18+9) ≈ 659.7.
Frequently asked questions
What shapes use this?
Buckets, lampshades, drinking cups and storage silos are common frustums.
What if r = 0?
The formula becomes the volume of a full cone, (1/3)πR²h.
