How it works

Cost per gallon = bottle price ÷ gallons treated · Cost per tank = cost per gallon × tank size · Annual = cost per tank × treated fill-ups

Fuel additives are dosed by volume of fuel, so the real cost is the bottle price spread across the gallons it treats, then scaled to your tank. A bottle that treats 100 gallons is cheap per tank even if the bottle looks pricey. This helps you compare products fairly on a per-gallon basis and decide how often treatment is worth it — many cleaners are designed for occasional use rather than every fill.

Worked example

An $8 bottle that treats 100 gallons costs $0.08 per gallon. On a 15-gallon tank that is $1.20 per fill-up; treating 12 fill-ups a year totals about $14.40 and uses roughly 1.8 bottles.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I use a fuel additive?

It depends on the product and purpose. Many fuel-system cleaners are meant for occasional use — every few thousand miles or a few times a year — while some fuel stabilizers or anti-gel treatments are dosed at each fill. Follow the label’s treat ratio.

Why measure cost per gallon instead of per bottle?

Bottles treat different amounts of fuel, so the sticker price alone is misleading. Cost per gallon lets you compare a small concentrated bottle against a large diluted one on equal terms.

Do fuel additives save money?

They can help keep injectors and valves clean, which supports efficiency, but the fuel-economy gains are usually modest. Weigh the annual cost shown here against any expected benefit for your specific vehicle.
