How it works

Total = service fee + casket/urn + burial/cremation + marker + other charges

A funeral bill is the sum of independent line items, and the two largest are usually the funeral home’s basic service fee and the casket. Cremation without a viewing removes the casket and much of the service cost, which is why it typically runs a few thousand dollars less than a traditional burial. Federal rules let you buy the casket elsewhere and require an itemized price list, so comparing homes on these five categories is the most effective way to control the total.

Worked example

A $2,500 service fee, $2,500 casket, $1,800 for a burial plot, a $1,500 marker and $1,200 of flowers, obituary and transport sum to $9,500. Choosing cremation and a simple urn in place of the casket and plot could cut that by $3,000 or more.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a funeral cost on average?

A traditional burial with a viewing commonly runs $7,000–$12,000 in the US, while a direct cremation can be $1,000–$3,000. The exact figure depends most on the casket, the plot and the funeral home’s service fee.

What is the basic service fee?

It is a non-declinable charge that covers the funeral home’s overhead and coordination — planning, permits and staff. Under the FTC Funeral Rule it must be disclosed separately, and you pay it regardless of the other choices you make.

Can I lower funeral costs?

Yes — buying the casket from a third-party seller, choosing cremation, skipping embalming where not required, and comparing itemized price lists from several homes are the biggest levers. The Funeral Rule entitles you to those itemized prices.
