Glue Coverage & Clamp Count Calculator
Size a panel glue-up: how much wood glue the joints need and how many clamps to space evenly along the boards for even pressure.
How it works
Glue lines = boards − 1 · Mating area = glue lines × length × thickness · Clamps per side = ⌊length ÷ spacing⌋ + 1, doubled for top & bottom
Two numbers govern a glue-up: enough glue on every mating surface, and enough clamps to press it flat. Yellow (PVA) glue covers roughly 250 ft² per gallon at a proper glue line — you want full, even coverage that squeezes out a thin bead everywhere, not a thick starved-then-flooded joint. For clamping, the pressure from each clamp spreads out at about a 45° cone, so clamps placed every 6–8 inches give overlapping pressure along the whole length. Alternating clamps above and below the panel cancels the tendency to bow, which is why the count here is doubled. Cauls across the width help keep the surface flush between clamps.
Worked example
Five boards 3/4″ thick and 24″ long make four glue lines. Mating area = 4 × 24 × 0.75 = 72 in² (0.5 ft²), needing about 0.26 fl oz of glue. Clamps along the length: 24 ÷ 8 = 3, + 1 = 4 per side; alternating top and bottom gives 8 clamps for even, bow-free pressure.
Frequently asked questions
How much glue is too much?
You want a thin, continuous film that produces a small, even squeeze-out bead all along the joint. A little squeeze-out confirms full coverage; a heavy flood just makes cleanup harder and does not add strength. No squeeze-out at all can mean a starved joint.
Why clamp from both sides?
A clamp pulls the panel toward its bar, which can bow the glue-up if all clamps are on one face. Alternating clamps above and below the panel balances those forces and keeps the surface flat, so the count here assumes top-and-bottom clamping.
How long should I leave the clamps on?
For most PVA glues, keep clamps on for at least 30–60 minutes and avoid stressing the joint for 24 hours to reach full strength. Cooler temperatures and oily woods need longer clamp time.
