How it works
Cubic yards = length × width × (depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27; tons ≈ yards × 1.4
Gravel is sold by the cubic yard or ton. Compute the volume in cubic feet, convert to yards (27 ft³ each), then to tons using a typical gravel density of about 1.4 tons per cubic yard.
Worked example
A 40×10 ft drive at 4" deep is about 4.9 cubic yards, roughly 6.9 tons.
Frequently asked questions
How deep should a gravel driveway be?
A total of 4–6 inches over a base is common; more for heavy vehicles or soft ground.
Does density vary?
Yes — crushed stone runs about 1.3–1.5 tons per cubic yard depending on the material.
