How it works

Total = Verbal + Quant · Percentile = concordance lookup(section score)

The GRE reports Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning on separate 130–170 scales, and the two sections are NOT interchangeable: the same scaled score sits at a very different percentile in each. A 160 is around the 84th percentile in Verbal but only the high 60s in Quant, because the Quant pool skews higher. Admissions offices read the two percentiles separately, so a balanced total can hide a weak section.

Worked example

A 155 Verbal falls near the 67th percentile and a 160 Quant near the 68th, for a total of 315 out of 340 — a solid, well-balanced score for many programs.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Verbal and Quant use different percentiles?

Each section is normed against everyone who took it. The Quant pool contains many high scorers from quantitative fields, so a given scaled score maps to a lower percentile there than the same number does in Verbal.

Is the Analytical Writing score included?

No. Analytical Writing is scored 0–6 in half-point steps on its own percentile scale and is not part of the 130–170 sections or the 260–340 total.

How accurate are these percentiles?

They are close approximations from ETS concordance tables and move a point or two each year as the test-taker pool changes. Use them to gauge your standing, not as an official figure.
