How it works

Effective length = gutter length × (1 + waste%) · Sections = ceil(effective length ÷ section length)

Gutter guards keep leaves and debris out of the gutter and are sold as rigid sections, snap-in screens or rolls of a fixed length. Because you have to cut sections to fit at corners, downspouts and end caps, a small waste allowance keeps you from coming up short. Take the total length of gutter that will be protected, add the waste, and divide by the length of one section.

Worked example

A house with 120 ft of gutter, at a 5% waste allowance, needs 126 ft of coverage. With 4-foot sections that is 126 ÷ 4 = 31.5, rounded up to 32 sections, covering 128 ft.

Frequently asked questions

How long is one gutter guard section?

It depends on the product: rigid mesh and reverse-curve guards commonly come in 3- or 4-foot sections, while micro-mesh and screen types are often sold in longer rolls. Set the section length to match what you are buying.

Do I need to measure both the gutters and the downspouts?

Guards only go on the horizontal gutter runs, not the downspouts, so measure the total length of gutter along the eaves. Add every run including any that turn corners.

Why include a waste allowance?

Sections rarely divide evenly into your gutter length, and you lose a little at corners, end caps and around downspout outlets where guards must be trimmed. A 5% allowance covers those cuts on a typical house.
